Course Purpose

This American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) course offered by Safety Penn Training is designed for those who work in the healthcare field in hospital and office settings. This course is equivalent to the AHA certification offering.

The BLS course provides participants with the knowledge and skills they need to assess, recognize and care for patients who are experiencing respiratory arrest, cardiac arrest, airway obstruction or opioid overdose. When a patient experiences a life-threatening emergency, healthcare providers need to act swiftly and promptly.

This course emphasizes providing high-quality care and integrating psychomotor skills with critical thinking and problem solving to achieve the best possible patient outcomes.

Who Needs the BLS Course?

This course is designed for those who work in the healthcare field in a hospital, office setting, pharmacists, etc. This course is equivalent to the AHA certification.

Basic Life Support Learning Objectives 

  • Integrate communication, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills during a high-performance BLS team response

  • Apply concepts of effective teamwork when caring for a patient experiencing a life-threatening emergency

  • Apply a systematic, continuous approach to assess, recognize and care for adults, children and infants experiencing a life-threatening emergency

  • Perform a rapid assessment for responsive and unresponsive adults, children and infants

  • Effectively care for adults, children and infants in respiratory arrest

  • State the principles of high-quality CPR for adults, children and infants

  • Identify BLS differences among adults, children and infants

  • Provide high-quality chest compressions for adults, children and infants

  • Deliver effective ventilations to adults, children and infants using a pocket mask and bag-valve-mask (BVM) resuscitator

  • Provide high-quality BLS care for adults, children and infants in single- and multiple-provider situations

  • Deliver effective abdominal thrusts, back blows and chest thrusts for adults, children and infants with airway obstruction

  • Demonstrate effective use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) for adults, children and infants

  • State the principles of care for a patient experiencing an opioid overdose

Instructors

Instructor holds a Basic Life Support Instructor certificate. 

Certification Requirements

  • Attend all class sessions

  • Participate in all course activities

  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills

Participants who successfully complete the Basic Life Support course will receive a BLS Certificate that is valid for 2 years from the date of course completion.

Required Class Manual

The Basic Life Support Participant’s Manual is required when taking this course and a digital copy of the manual will be provided for participants, as well as a hard copy will be supplied for class use.

The manual includes coverage of essential emergency care components for all age groups (adult, child, infant) including:

  • Rapid Assessment and Visual Survey

  • CPR/AED for Adults, Children and Infants

  • Obstructed Airways

  • Opioid Overdoses

  • Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Communication and Teamwork

  • The Emergency Medical Services System

  • Legal Considerations

  • Precautions

Hard copy manuals are provided to the participants at the in-person session but the participants don't get to keep them (part of our "green initiative" philosophy). A digital copy will be emailed after the completion of the course. If you would still like to have a hard copy manual for yourself it can be purchased directly from the American Red Cross site.

The Basic Life Support course is available in two different delivery formats:

  • Online* + In-person: 4 hours total

  • Cost: $80.00​

  • In-person (Classroom only): 4 hours total

    • Offered to groups of 6 or more​
